Hack (hãk) n: A clever solution to a problem.

Cool sites

  • Hackzine
  • Shields UP! portscan of first 1056 ports (1023 standard service ports plus next 33 {because of typical unsecure Microsoft bullshit}). Don't be alarmed if your IDENT authentication port 113 is merely closed but not stealthed - You can read more about that at the portscan results page. Also, unless you're profixying, you'll note that the site easily grabs your internal IP. Now, in addition to grabbing cookies to track your surfing history, your public IP is how you get those ads for 'hot singles'/'hot Russian brides'/whatever in your immediate neighborhood (zip code/tel area code).
  • Anonymous Surfing: This is a fun AuditMyPC thing that displays your location, public IP, private IP, Host Name, UserAgent, tel area code, and a neat satellite map of your location inset with a Google map.

Cross Platform

by Gina Trapani, Editor, LifeHacker

You use more computers and operating systems to get your work done today than ever before. But how do you keep your files synchronized between them? Plenty of OS-specific tools can mirror folders, but you need something cross-platform and highly customizable. You need the file mirroring utility, rsync. Whether you want to backup your data, distribute files securely or mirror your working documents over the internet from the office to home, between computers on your local network, or from your computer to your web server, rsync can get the job done. In this example, rsync mirrors folders between a Mac and PC over a secure connection.

Today Mac OS and Windows can work together in harmony on the same home network, syncing files and folders between them, sharing files and printers, mounting one another's drives and using the same equipment, like wireless routers and USB drives. If you're considering a mixed Mac/PC home or office, here's a primer on how the two systems inter-operate (and the few instances when they don't.

Security

  • Secure Your Stuff

Anybody can feel more secure about their systems, networks and data, with the help of some free software and easy tweaks and add-ons.

Cloud / Web Apps

Hardware

In 2006, you could turn your $60 router into a highly configurable $600 router with DD-WRT, a free, open source firmware. Since then there's been a lot of development of open source firmwares, and a new favorite is a firmware called Tomato. Tomato does almost everything DD-WRT does—from Wi-Fi signal boosting to Quality of Service bandwidth allocation—in addition to offering a simplified interface chock-full of fancy charts and graphs. Sound good? Oh, and that annoying 'resetting the router' stuff should go away.

Tomato is free open source Linux-based firmware for several Broadcom-based Wi-Fi routers, including the Linksys WRT54G. The major emphasis of Tomato is on stability, speed and efficiency.

Asus eee PC
The eeePC is a killer subnotebook, and great for kids since it can hack abuse, and wiith Leopard it just gets better. At 7" and weighing only 0.92kg, you can take the Eee PC anywhere. An 8GB solid-state drive, which consumes less power, allows the device to boot quickly and is less susceptible to shock damage since scanhead crashes are a thing of the past. 900 MHz Intel Celeron-M ULV 353 which has 512 kB L2 cache RAM, @ 630 MHz (70 MHz x 9) cooled by a fan. 1 GB RAM DDR2-533/667. Graphics - Integrated Intel GMA 900 graphics processor (Shared Memory Architecture), additional VGA port (up to 1600×1280 pixels). WiFi 802.11 b/g. 0.3 megapixel camera; up to 640×480, up to 30 fps
The only problem is that the eeePC only supports SSE2 instead of the SSE3 that Leopard is coded for. Kinda a bummer, and will require some extra tinkering to coax the OS on the eeePC. Thankfully, that's addressed in the great Hackintosh hack at Lifehacker

Software

  • Speed Up Acrobat Reader (Pretty Substantially)

Acrobat Reader sucks because it takes 5/10 seconds to load when you open a pdf, but it can be sped up spankily.

  1. Go to the installation folder of acrobat reader
  2. Move all the files and folders from the "plugins" directory to the "Optional" directory. (I repeat.. cut and paste the files NOT copy & paste).
  3. Make sure that acrobat reader is not open else it will lock the files and not allow you to move the files).
  4. Acrobat Reader will load fast

Browser

Mobile

It's great that your iPhone has a data plan and a killer mobile browser, but when you're sitting at the airport waiting to catch a plane with your laptop right next to you, wouldn't it be nice to use your full-on desktop browser? Out of the box your iPhone won't allow you to tether your EDGE data connection to another computer wirelessly, but with a little ingenuity on your part you'll be browsing the net on your laptop through your iPhone's data service in no time.

There are a lot of tools that can sync files between computers, but none stand out for their ease-of-use like the freeware, cross-platform FolderShare. It's a Microsoft-owned project, but it works with both Windows and Mac computers, syncing files in real time between selected folders as soon as the files change.

You want access to your home computer wherever you are, whatever you're doing, whether that's via a remote desktop connection, SSH, FTP, web interface, or any other remote access you've set up. The catch is, you don't like throwing money away to an always-on system. Luckily, you can boot and shut down your system remotely so that it's ready for you when you need it and it's not wasting energy when you don't.
NOTE: Wake-on-LAN only works with wired network connections

Zibri, the iPhone Dev Team Member, alienated for releasing the “true” jailbreak method that the iPhone dev team was attempting to keep secret until the release of Apple’s official SDK, released a much simpler single step method to jailbreak iPhone firmware 1.1.3 along with some minor fixes. Zibri was also the iPhone hacker to confirm the rumor/news that the iPhone Application SDK Key has leaked.
