The biotech I am involved with got a new box announced today with the above specs handling the data. But tomorrow another company is announcing something that is going to blow it out of the water.

Sometimes it sucks to be cutting edge. The Mac I have under my desk has that processor. OK I don't have 12 TB and 192 GB of memory times four but 32 GB of RAM does it for me now.

45th Anniversary of Moore's Law is April 19. Glad to see it is alive and still working.

ps. Hmm, bad reporting. Can't be sure there are 192GB on each blade or that is total for four blades. 48GB RAM per blade is less impressive.

So I'll futz around with updating the software, Celandine's request for more/better smilies, MYcode for multimedia-video embedding/spoilers/whatever/etc.
So, sometime in the next 24-30 hours or so, this will come offline for a few minutes for the update; with the smilies, Mycode and whatever else done live on-the-fly.

Maybe add a new forum, maybe something like The Living Room, since that's where a lot of computing, communications and entertainment stuff comes together, so that bucket seems to make sense insofar as getting the discrete chunks right, demystifying stuff/technobabble/misconceptions/etc, and getting it right in unison as an optimal unified user experience (sort of the Apple way).

So, this is a good opportunity to get off my duff and get this out of the way, so I can jump off onto working some too long neglected low hanging fruit stuff to harvest.

Bing maps with Birds Eye View has always been a bit better with the close up views. They just got a bit better. You have to download "Silverlight", quit Safari, and go back to Bing maps but it is well worth it. The coolest thing is it will automatically select the best view from the distance you click on. Find your house and the spin around it at closeup view. If you have done any yard work you can tell when the shot was taken. I have been building rock walls for the past two years and can tell exactly when the shot was taken by where my granite is.

Sure enough the mobilme can find my iPhone. It's actually kind of freaky how well it does. It centers on the correct end of my house. And then I can make it twiddle some music. That's peachy but I want to do more.

I am going to be in a kayak challenge paddling 21 miles around Cape Ann. I am telling a certain number of people who will ridicule me mercilessly if I chicken out or bail half way through the race. But I want them to see the little iPhone dot of me making my way around the Cape. They can go to the proper breakwater at the right time and scream catcalls out at me or drag me out of the coffee shop if I stop in Rockport.

But how do I do this? I can give my wife the keys to my mobilme account and she can watch where I am. This will be very cool for all my training runs too. If I get stuck on Thacher Island she will know exactly where. But I have searched high and low for software that would patch the GPS signal out so anyone that day could tune into my web page and see where I am.

Checked out their Phoenix image editor and Raven vector editor. Nice features, snappy enough. On Amazon S3 (powerful, redundant across multiple cloud datacenters). Impressive gallery of stuff done, some pretty cool trick stuff.

Will have to try out their other stuff other time. So far, so good.

Oh, and it's free. Well, with free, your files are public ( you retain exclusive rights to them, as source they are not editable by public, although they are subject to usage in derivatives {with the derived art citing you as the source creator} ). However, for $20/year, you can make them not publically available, i.e., private, or editable by whitelisted contacts, etc, etc.

Oh, earlier demo'd stealth web-based CADCAM where stuff processed on commercially hosted paralleled multi-processor computers, with some client-side applets interfacing/whatever. Now, of course, I just uploaded a massive dataset to avoid the massive amount of manually building a dataset (involving a lot of modeling). Blew me out - Buffered preview rendered in seconds - The time was probably mostly in HTTP negotiations, buffer, and browser render. With GBs / the-inevitable-someday TBs of core RAM, this is the way to go for heavy lifting. Now, stuff like Intel's 48-core chip with each core discretely programmable, is the stuff of today - Tomorrow, that kind of processing power will be a commodity chip in a multi-processor supercomputer in a parallel processing grid.
What is the total?
Did you get 5000? Most people do, but the correct answer is actually 4100. If you don't believe me, try using a calculator or writing it on paper.

A game changer or a clunker? I think it fits the mold of the iPod and iPhone and is a remolding game changer. No one remembers when the iPod showed up and it was all WTF? There were mp3 players out there but they were toast. It was not evident until nine months later.

Same with the iPhone. Not secure, will not compete with blackberry. Really? Epic fail for sure.

The iPad is on the same trajectory but might actually become the de facto new thing everyone needs way before Christmas.

Downloading photos direct from camera through wire or through USB. Do you know anyone with a camera that doesn't download their photos? I actually know some people like that. Computer phobes. They exist. Maybe not in your computer literate world but they are out there.

What am I buying? I have an iPhone and an MBAir. This niche I can wait a bit for second gen possibly even third gen.

What I want:
1) a true AGPS chip on board. Do I have to get the 3G model to get that or wait until 2nd gen? Can't really tell. (AGPS is a chip which will use 3G and real GPS satellite signal and compass to make the best locator ever.)

2) Tethering of my digital camera. Set up my camera and while I am on the other end of the wire I can change focus, temperature, shutter and F-Stop while viewing what the camera sees. Oh and a shutter release button too. Why not? And not with some honking DSLR but with some nice pocket Panasonic with a Zeiss lens and 12 MB or so of CMOS chip.

The first gen is cool but the third gen is going to be the instant chubby. Steve Jobs does it again. He has so many cards yet to be played on this it isn't funny. My two wants are just tip of the iceberg.

On Steve Job's Tombstone (may he live to be 104) "The Man Who Saved the Publishing Industry". The iPhone and the iPod will be forgotten compared to the iPad. You can repost this claim in Spring 2011 and beyond but I think I will be the one doing the happy dance (complete with iPad). So will the New York Times because they are granted a new lease on life by Steve Jobs.

Why? Because I could not watch the announcement live. I was getting a first look at the next DNA sequencer. My eyebrows went up a tad when I was shown an iPhone app to monitor the 800,000 dollar instrument. That was kind of weird. When someone in my group mentioned the iPad the company said they have already written the app. They have had the SDK and APIs for some time. How does Apple do that and keep everyone's mouth shut? Because Steve Jobs is Steve Jobs.

Even if Kindle went with a color screen -- this iPad makes my Kindle obsolete.

Well, not for me. I enjoy reading books on the Kindle. Doesn't matter if they're black and white. I have my iPhone to do most of the stuff you COULD do on an iPad, but really, I do not use it for a lot of other stuff than a telephone.

For me the iPhone is handy to look at some weather. Google Earth is ample enough for me to find a street or business when I am driving.

Voice Memo is handy for a quick note to remind me of something to do later.

Camera for quickie pictures.

My Kindle does not require a $14.99 or $29.99 charge to read the books I download. I don't need more storage memory for tons of books, as I archive them on Amazon/Kindle [wherever]

Games? Na! I don't even play Solitaire on my iPhone.

So, unlike with each new introduction of an updated iMac, I am not suffering any Apple Envy! At this time, the iPad does not sound like I need one. [However, {if I live long enough} who is to tell what the future iPads may acquire and entice me.] [smile]
